How to Succeed as a Professional Speaker
Professional speaking is one of the most LUCRATIVE but challenging professions around. NSA Illinois’ Speakers Academy provides all the information you’ll need to understand the business of speaking. The faculty is comprised of dedicated, accomplished speaking professionals who make all or part of their living as professional speakers. Participants learn the speaking business from the inside out from veterans who know and understand how the business works. While the curriculum includes enhancing your presentation skills, the emphasis of NSA Illinois’ Speakers Academy is on creating a framework to develop and market yourself to people at corporations, associations, and organizations who hire speakers – and pay to do so. This program will help you refine your business plan; increase your visibility; create a fee schedule; develop profitable products; and improve your platform skills.

The Spring 2017 Suburban Program
Each session contains essential information ranging from improving platform skills to marketing and running your business. Participants will be equipped with the tools they need to succeed as professional speakers. All sessions will be held on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Technology Education Center, College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Session 1 – February 11
Introduction, Professional Awareness and Topic Development, with guest faculty Steve Beck, CSP; Lori Miller and Conor Cunneen
We’ll have an overview of the course, highlight the importance of the speaking profession and then help you identify your area of expertise and how to define and refine your own topic for your target audience.
Session 2 – February 25
Sales and Marketing, with guest faculty Bill Guertin & Sima Dahl
Success in the speaking business is dependent on your ability to sell and market your services. During this class we’ll talk about successful strategies for positioning yourself to those who hire speakers, the importance of the sales cycle and marketing techniques to get booked.
Session 3 – March 11
Professional Development, Presenting and Performing, and Platform Mechanics, with guest faculty Steve Beck, CSP
Developing your skills as a speaker includes your commitment to the profession, the art of presentations skills and the logistics of speaking from the stage. You’ll learn about everything from “owning the room” to managing the microphone.
