How to Succeed as a Professional Speaker
Professional speaking is one of the most LUCRATIVE but challenging professions around. NSA Illinois’ Speakers Academy provides all the information you’ll need to understand the business of speaking. The faculty is comprised of dedicated, accomplished speaking professionals who make all or part of their living as professional speakers. Participants learn the speaking business from the inside out from veterans who know and understand how the business works. While the curriculum includes enhancing your presentation skills, the emphasis of NSA Illinois’ Speakers Academy is on creating a framework to develop and market yourself to people at corporations, associations, and organizations who hire speakers – and pay to do so. This program will help you refine your business plan; increase your visibility; create a fee schedule; develop profitable products; and improve your platform skills.

The 2016 Chicago Program
Each session contains essential information ranging from improving platform skills to marketing and running your business. Participants will be equipped with the tools they need to succeed as professional speakers. All sessions will be held on Saturday mornings at Roosevelt University in Chicago and will run from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.
Session 1 – September 24th
Introduction, Sales and Marketing (Bill Guertin & Sima Dahl)
Success in the speaking business is dependent on your ability to sell and market your services. During this class we’ll talk about successful strategies for positioning yourself to those who hire speakers, the importance of the sales cycle and marketing techniques to get booked.
Session 2 – October 1
Professional Awareness and Topic Development (Conor Cunneen)
We’ll have an overview of the course, highlight the importance of the speaking profession and then help you identify your area of expertise and how to define and refine your own topic for your target audience.
Session 3 – October 8th
Professional Development, Presenting and Performing, and Platform Mechanics (Steve Beck, CSP)
Developing your skills as a speaker includes your commitment to the profession, the art of presentations skills and the logistics of speaking from the stage. You’ll learn about everything from “owning the room” to managing the microphone.
Session 4 – October 22nd
Authorship and Product Development (Haydn Shaw)
Giving a speech isn’t the only way professional speakers build their businesses. Books, workbooks, CDs, webinars–there are all kinds of ways to generate profit as a speaker. Come learn about ways to expand your platform.
Session 5 – November 5th
Managing Your Business (John Blumberg, CSP)
You can be great on the stage but a lot of your success will depend on what happens behind the scenes. In the session we’ll talk about how to set up and maintain the business side of your business so you can turn your speaking from a hobby into a profit center.
Session 6 – November 12th (Mikki Williams, CSP, CPAE)
Putting it All Together / Graduation
Time to take a bow! You’ve gone through the 10-module workbook, heard from top-notch speakers and now it’s time to give your own speech. Everyone gets a little stage time, then we end the class by celebrating with the representatives of the board of NSA Illinois and our very own chapter CSPs.
The investment in your future success is $795, which includes six 4-hour classes. NSA Illinois’ Speakers Academy and Speaker University alumni may attend NSA Illinois’ Speakers Academy for a $195 reviewer fee. Reviewers should also complete the application. Please note: once accepted and registered for NSA Illinois’ Speakers Academy, your program tuition will not be refunded.
