2006 Nominees for NSA-IL Humanitarian Foundation's

Humanitarian of the Year Award
 

The NSA-Illinois Humanitarian Foundation is pleased to announce the following three nominees for the 2006 Humanitarian of the Year. These nominees have been selected for their good works through active involvement in causes for humanity. A Selection Committee will determine the 2006 Humanitarian of the Year from among these three nominees. The Committee consists of the current Chapter President (Pat McWard) and President-Elect (Al Lautenslager), the immediate past two Humanitarians of the Year (Cheryl Perlitz and Cheryl Kuba), and one of the Foundation’s Directors (Cyndi Maxey).

The nominees, the final recipient and his or her chosen charity will all be honored at the Annual NSA- Illinois Foundation Gala Benefit in Naperville on Sunday, May 7, 2006 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Mark your calendars now and be on the lookout for your official invitation! The nominees include Linda Blackman, Deborah Chambers-Chima and Kevin O'Connor.

For Chicago’s Misericordia, a special home for children and adults with special needs, Linda has volunteered in the bakery, the restaurant and for Candy Days. Through the Northwest Jewish Employment Resource she created a special program for the unemployed in her area entitled “Time To Get Hired: How To more Effectively Sell and Market Yourself!” Linda serves on the Sisterhood Board of Temple Chai where she packs and delivers packages to those in need and chairs events. She has created a regional program called STORIES TO TREASURE – how to preserve the art of storytelling from generation to generation.

Before moving to our chapter, she served on the New Leadership Board of the Pittsburgh Symphony and as a board member of the Pennsylvania Educational Network for Eating Disorders (PENED). where she spearheaded the building of an outpatient recovery facility. There she also served on the board of Allegheny East Mental Health & Rehabilitation Center, was a member of the Altrusa International, Inc. of Pittsburgh, and other steering committees for organizations to promote the economic and arts related initiatives.

Involved with NSA and its chapters for over 15 years, Linda is Past President Pennsylvania Speakers Association. She has spoken to chapters and various NSA convention and workshop breakout sessions as well as serving in national leadership roles including chairing NSA’s first World Congress, Chair of Chapter Leadership, and currently serving on the Strategic Partnership Council. She has earned the CSP designation.

CHAMBERS-CHIMA, DEBORAH

Deborah volunteers at the Warrenville Youth Center where she works with girls who are imprisoned for committed crimes. She has conducted self- esteem and leadership workshops to help them identify their potential and set goals to accomplish upon their release. She has also volunteered with the Big Brother/Big Sister of Decatur Association for a number of years in which she was matched with the same young lady who is now in her first year of college and although the formal program has ended, they are still in touch and will always remain in a big sister/little sister relationship.

Through her church affiliation she volunteers at Hesed House for the homeless in Aurora. As a life member of a community action based organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. she volunteers time with clothes drives for the needy, feeding the homeless at Thanksgiving and Christmas, baby showers through their partnership with the March of Dimes for young pregnant girls and monetarily providing scholarship donations to deserving college students.

Deborah serves on the NSA-IL Board of Directors for 2005 -2006 as the VP of Communications. She works with the Executive Director to ensure that our chapter email blasts are timely and engaging. She has also assisted on chapter committees.

O’CONNOR, KEVIN E., CSP

Kevin is Past president of the National Association for Parents of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI), formerly on the regional board of the American Foundation for the Blind, worked as parent advisor for the Chicago based Guild for the Blind, contributed to 3 books on blindness, and nationally trains teachers of the blind. Kevin has presented at most of the schools for those who are blind or visually impaired in the United States, continues to present to parent weekend groups for parents of children who are blind or visually impaired, and with his son has presented to physicians in training who attend the Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University as well as the annual foundation event for the Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Francisco.

For over 30 years, Kevin has been actively involved in Palatine-based PHD (the Society for the Preservation of Human Dignity), a counseling center for women who may be single, pregnant, abused, and poor. He has been a Board member, clinical supervisor, personal supervisor, donor, presenter for training seminars, and consultant to the Board and staff.

Critical in the formation of the Ministry of Care at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg, Kevin volunteered within hospitals and nursing homes to provide one-to-one ministry of counseling and healing for those in need, including the terminally ill and also trained others in this work. Kevin has volunteered in the training of various ministries for the Archdiocese of Chicago, Portland, and Belleville including youth ministry, leadership formation, religious educators and work with Boards and with religious leaders.

Past President of the National Speakers Association Illinois, Kevin is a 25-year member of NSA, has earned the CSP designation, and is currently Chair of the NSA CSP Council. He has mentored chapter members, chaired developmental events, spoken at Candidate U and Fast Tracks; presented at speaker schools, professional development days, and roundtables; led a living room chat, and held a tele-seminar for Illinois members.
